National Judges Convention 2012

Last week Becky and Jack aka Carinsio were invited to be one of the guinea pigs for the National Judges Convention at Bury Farm, held by 2012 Olympic Judges Stephen Clark and Wim Ernes.

They discussed how they marked a horse and what they look for in a ‘Medal Winning Horse’ as below (taken from BD website)

“At these seminars, we so often discuss grand prix horses, but almost never talk about judging young horses the right way. As judges, we control the way the riders train their young horses; that is why it is so important to get it right,” said Wim, who is president of the Dutch selection committee for young horses and a member of the KWPN stallion committee. “In the young horse competitions in previous years, riders put a lot of pressure on their horses. A lot of horses that won these classes as three-, four- and five-year-olds, we didn’t see any more as six-, seven- and eight-year-olds because they had problems with their back or joints.”
He went on to explain how the tests have been improved and praised the Dutch system highly as 80% to 90% of successful young horses make it to small tour level.
“You are assessing the horse’s future ability. By looking at the horse’s three gaits, you try to foresee the horse’s ability to collect, to take weight on his hind legs and carry himself,” said Wim, who strongly believes that the lower levels should be judged by the most experienced judges.

Wim said: “It is important to explain what is good and bad about a movement. One part might be worth an eight, another a six, and you have to balance it out. I find that once you comment on it, then the mark finds you. If the movement had been performed satisfactorily, it has to be a minimum of six. If I describe something as ‘fairly good’, it earns a seven.”

Wim was asked to predict what kind of horse was going to win gold at the 2020 Olympic Games.
His reply: “A horse with five good gaits: walk, trot, canter, piaffe and passage.”

We think Jack could be in the running – fingers crossed 🙂

Home-bred Black Beauty…..SOLD..

We wish Kathy Haywood & Deluxe all the best. We are sure they will be a great combination for the future 🙂

16.2hh 4 year old beautiful black stallion by Hotline out of a KWPN graded mare. Super balanced, uphill paces and a fantastic ability to sit.

Deluxe has an extremely trainable temperament and will easily train to the highest levels and be very successful. He competed at his first show at Myerscough PL where he was placed 5th in the 4 yr old Young Horse class against some excellent competition.

He has impeccable manners in and out of the stable, lives happily on a yard with mares, geldings and other stallions. Good to hack and enjoys being turned out. He is great to deal with in all ways, shoe, box, bath etc and loves attention!

A super home is wanted for this super horse who has looks to die for!

Myerscough Premier League

Myerscough PL was as friendly and well run as always – it’s a super venue which is made even better by helpful staff who always try to sort things out for you! Moody Dressage had a very successful trip – three wins, four seconds, and numerous other top ten placings – it’s lovely when all the hard work that goes into this job is repaid by some good rides and good placings!

Becky had five rides over the weekend, first one on Julie Lockey’s and The Parents’ super five year old ‘Carinsio’ aka Jack Jack. He won his class in fine style, looking a million dollars and earning some very positive comments from International judge Trond Asmyr. The divine ‘Salsa’ then took the top spot in Fridays PSG, showing a continuing positive trend in his education – there are still some moments where he gets a bit tight, but others where his improving suppleness and elasticity really shine through. Julie Lockey’s beautiful and colossal Fursten Hit (all 18.2 of him) produced a good test, showing improved strength since his last outing in August 11, but still with more to come. Becky started early on Saturday morning with two rides in the four year old class, Julie’s stunning stallion ‘Deluxe’ and Nicki Moxon’s lovely moving ‘Renoir’. It was a hotly contested competition, but both the horses did really well finishing 4th and 5th. Josie Gyllensvard had a very exciting time when she got to ride Deluxe for Julie in the ride off – it was quite something with 10 four year olds cantering around the arena together!!! Thankfully most of them were so pooped by this point there were no calamities!

The music classes in the evening have an excellent atmosphere. Becky had Biff, Salsa and Wally competing, and Eilidh Grant was riding Comanche Crumble. Both these two have spent a significant amount of time this week sorting out their excellent floorplans and music, but all the hard work was rewarded when Eilidh came second behind Laura Fry and her lovely Remming in the PSG, Salsa won the Inter 1, and Wally came second in the Grand Prix. (He really should have won, cos their music was totally fab, and they both had so much fun doing it!) 😉

Emma Corbett and Feo had a great weekend, notching up a super second place in the PSG and the Advanced medium on Thursday, and third in the Young Rider test. Eilidh had another second place in the YR test. Go girls! Taisie Neal and Josie Gyllensvard were 8th and 10th in the YR test, and Ryan Todd missed out on the placings due to a bit of tension, but this is an inexperienced partnership, and it will come good! 🙂

On Sunday Harriet Williams rode our darling Dot in the pony test, and as you can see from the photos, did a fantastic job. Once a few little glitches get ironed out I think they will be a force to be reckoned with! And Wally finshed his weekend off with a super GP, finishing in 4th place, but gaining a very exciting 69% from the foriegn judge! Whooppee!

Vale View Report 18th Feb

On 18th February 9 horses and 8 riders set off to Vale View to ride 18 tests! Everyone was extremely organised and what could have turned out to be quite a stressful day actually went very well – although Becky’s hands did turn blue she was so cold, but some cheesy chips soon sorted that!

Becky was first on riding Josie’s Don Angelo in the Elementary, Donald started off a little tense but settled as the test went on and scored an amazing 75.94% Josie then took over the ride for the second Elementary and again, Donald started off tense as he went in but settled and came away with another excellent score of 70.29% 🙂

Sam also competed in the Elementarys on Royal Alliance, a lovely mare who is showing great talent. Sam did a great job on Royale as she can also get a bit tense – Sam scored 69.69% and 69.12% coming 2nd to Donald in both – very consistent 🙂

Next was Becky riding Elaine Hack’s Always Owen in the Medium – Owen was a very good boy and scored 66.9% gaining 2nd place. Gen, Owen’s normal rider then competed Owen in the second Medium class and got 64.71% which was very good considering Owen has had time off with an injury.

Moving up the levels to the Advanced Medium classes where, Sam riding Emma Blundell’s Keystone Diaz scored again very consistently 66.67% and 67.3% gaining 2nd place and equal 1st! Ryan riding Steph Willis’ Charlex Eskebjerg scored 66.33% and Eilidh riding her own Raphael Rosse scoreds 65.67% and 67.3% – well done!

Onto the Advanced class where we achieved 2nd, 3rd and 4th places with Josie riding her own Tobias with 64.71%, Grace riding her own Westminster Rapscallion (Jack!) with 64.12% and Eilidh on Rosse with 61.76%.

The final class of the day – the PSG – Grace had a really good test on Jack and scored 64.74%, Ryan was not too far behind on Charlie with 63.16%. Troy was a little more difficult but gave Josie good experience for the harder tests and scored 60.53%. Kelly also competed Kwadraat who was great warming up and enjoyed being out again but he then thought it would be quite amusing to put his tongue over the bit for the entire test, leaving Kelly pretty much a passenger and took himself around the test 🙂 naughty, naughty boy! Kelly still had good fun and hopes to take him out again 🙂
