Northallerton Show

On Wednesday 20th March we took a lorry load of horses from the yard to compete at Northallerton ranging from the babys in the 4 year old classes through to the more mature ponies in the FEI PYO classes!

Becky and Jack Jack Moody-Lockey aka Carinsio was first in the Elementary class and won with an outstanding score of 81.18% which is very much deserved 🙂 Kelly and her own Chaim T (Slim) came second with 69.12% (which would normally be a very good score) 🙂 Both horses also competed in the 6 year old YH Class – Jack won with 8.12 and Slim was 4th with 7.64. We were very pleased with both boys!

Becky then competed Josie’s Don Angelo in the PYO A102 & PSG to take 1st and 2nd place with 70.26% and 64.71%. Becky also competed Josie’s Troy in the PYO PSG and came 3rd and Linzi had a great day riding Kwad getting 4th with 64.41% proving to be a very good partnership 🙂

It was then Lainey and Nora’s 2nd appearance on the competition scene for the 4 year old YH Class. It was role reversal with Lainey ‘Eleanor’ winning the class with 8.02 and Nora ‘Eaimbry Eleonora’ coming 4th with 7.8 which we thought was quite harsh considering she won at Myerscough with a higher score and has vastly improved since then, but we are still extremely pleased with both girls who once again behaved impeccably and we are very excited about the futures they have in the dressage world 🙂

In Memory of Beautiful Biff

Biff trot 4web

The devastating decision was made last week for Biff (Furtsten Hit) to be put to sleep. He had suffered with extremely bad feet for a number of years due to his size and lack of foot growth. Our farrier Dean worked alongside our vet Peter from Hird & Partners tirelessly and fantastically to get them back on track, but tragically an injury to his hock whilst out in the field led to the final decision. It is such a sad loss of an amazingly talented and kind horse who was the big, beautiful, friendly giant of the yard and was loved by everyone.

Myerscough Premier League

The 3.30am start was well worth it on Thursday as we took Julie Lockey’s two four year old mares, Eaimbry Eleanora and Eleanor to do the young horse class and Josie’s Don Angelo to compete in he PSG with Becky.

nora
Eaimbry Eleanora

For their first show ‘Nora’ and ‘Lainey’ behaved impeccably not only when ridden but also standing on the lorry for most of the day! Julie bought Nora as a yearling and is by Fidertanz and Lainey was bred by Julie and is by Furst Romancier. It was a very strong class with some lovely horses but Becky and Nora rose to the challenge and won with a score of 8.1. Lainey who is a couple of months behind Nora in her training also did extremely well and gained 5th place with a score of 7.48. These two are very excting prospects for the future 🙂

Don Angelo aka Donald ridden by Becky in the PSG scored an excellent score of 68.42% which considering he backed off a bit in the test is very promising as the score could have been much bigger. This put them into a very credible 3rd place and this horse has so much more to offer, Josie is a very lucky girl 🙂

Friday and Saturday was busy with Hannah and Becky training Eilidh Grant, Ryan Todd, Jess Knapton and Josie Gyllensward for their tests, they all had a really good show with some super marks and top three placings. We are very proud to have such professional young riders amongst out team!

I have to say Saturday night was fantastic and our LEGEND, Wallenstein stole the show with Becky in the Grand Prix music to Doctor Who. They brought tears to all our eyes. He won the class with 72% He loved the prize giving and tried to bronck Becky off haha

Caluna was also amazing and came 2nd with 69.29%  Again it was a great test but she just got a little tense and sometimes likes to take over (must be a girl thing!)

The Grand Prix took place on Sunday with Wally and Caluna taking part. There were some top combinations in the class and Wally and Caluna were both a bit tricky after their very exciting night but still got some good scores with Wally getting 4th with 66.31% and Caluna 5th with 65.85%

All in all it was a very successful show, with so much potential from riders and horses from the yard. We would like to thank everyone that supports, works and helps at Moody Dressage 🙂

Client & Customer Testimonials……..

Over the last few months we have had some excellent feedback from clients who have lessons and customers who have bought horses from us. We would like to share a few with you as it is extrememly encouraging to feel we are successful in a very competitive and demanding sport 🙂

‘Becky Moody – I got mine there. He is a lovely Bramley Stud horse and very well mannered and behaved and loves people. I also found Becky very honest and down to earth. I looked at several places and have no hesitation in recommending her. Good luck. X’

‘I looked at a horse at Moody’s yard and was very impressed with the place and people, horse not for me but they were very kind and helpful and not pushy at all’

‘Becky moody is great and everyone is so nice’

‘ditto moody dressage. we have trained there for the last 10 years or so and hannah is very realistic in her expectations of people s abilities but wont see any obstacles in the quest for success. they do have several advanced horses that you may be able to ride, depending really on your ability and if you want to take your own horse too , you can be sure that it will be trained along very correct lines, with no corners being cut along the way’

‘Just to add a different option into the mix – Hannah and Becky Moody are pretty easy to get to from North Yorks (they are South Yorks, near Barnsley, but not far off M1). Hannah is the most inspirational trainer i have ever met. It is a lovely friendly yard with indoors and outdoors’

‘It was a great experince to take my horse for 3 days and have lessons with Hannah, I went with a good friend and we watched each others lessons and generally had a very sociable time. Its a very pretty location too so i’m sure there are lovely rides out if you go in good weather. Thoroughly recommend. http://www.moody-dressage.co.uk’

‘I would recommend Becky Moody. I looked for well over a year and tried several horses, many of which were not as described (3 inches shorter etc.) I then saw an advert on the BD forum and I went along not realizing who was advertising! Everyone was lovely to me, and I found their advice was honest and accurate. I bought the horse and he is fantastic. He is exactly what they told me he would be and I am so pleased that I found him. I really would suggest you try them’

‘Another vote for the Moody’s :)’

‘I was made very welcome at Moody’s yard and was not pushed at all but offered all the help I wanted’

‘Becky Moody just produced her own Carinsio and won the British 4-year old last year, 5-year old this year and they were selected to Verden where they came in the top 10. She along with Hannah started our youngster and coached our daughter for competing her in young horse classes where they qualified for the final. So they are capable of doing all aspects…. Highly recommend!’

‘Hannah and Becky Moody – http://www.moody-dressage.co.uk – based between Sheffield and Barnsley. Hannah is a complete marvel, has helped me so much oever the last 2 years. Very lovely family and happy yard’

‘We got our mare from Julie Lockey who also co-owns Carinsino (Jack) with the Moody’s and I believe she has other Painted Blacks as foals now’

‘Becky Moody’s Carinsino is also by Painted Black and again, super horse with a very active hind end with amazing temperament’

‘I would recommend Becky Moody – I bought my new horse from there and am very happy so far :)’

‘Carinsio is the most sensible horse, you would never believe he s such a mega star!!! im so pleased for the moody s who work their socks off often to help others more than themselves. they are such a hard working family!!!! they soooo deserve to have a horse like him> Fingers crossed for a star studded future for him and Becky!!!! Absolutely ace news!!!!!’

‘My fantastic trainer is Hannah Moody (Based near Barnsley http://www.moody-dressage.co.uk, lots of Moody fans here on the BD forum)’

‘Gunthwaite dressage. becky moody does a great job!!!’

‘Hannah Moody is brilliant. I can not describe what a substantial change Hannah has made to my riding in the 18ths. She pays attention to detail and takes no prisoners (but in a nice way!!). She is based in South Yorks with her sister Becky (who i believe is excellent too but i haven’t trained with her myself). Further info on http://www.moody-dressage.co.uk’

‘I couldnt have done it without Hannah Moody who got hold of me when i was still doing a bit of everything but mostly BSJAing (as it was then). She pretty early on said that the horse was capable and trainable enough to go up the levels. I only had access to Hannah once a month and trained solo inbetween and like Gilberry was left with homework. I’m pretty driven/focused/obsessive anyway so I follwed my instructions/homework and progressed from novice to PSG in a period of jsut over 4 years’

‘Hannah Moody has been very good to me as she knew I couldn’t always get a lesson and always explained the next step and what she would expect me to try and achieve before she saw me again.I would have loved to have had constant lessons’

“Hannah and Becky Moody. http://www.moody-dressage.co.uk They are based bewtween Barnsley and Sheffield. Lovely ladies, lovely family and yard. Most definitely lots of contacts.”

‘Another to endorse the Moody’s. We have been with them for about 5 years, and Hannah is training our young horse. Amazing folks…they will always do what is in the best interest of what you want to achieve’

‘I have a monthly clinic nearer home with Hannah and she is just amazing’

“Kirsty/Jonnah – if you are prepared to travel a little bit further i can wholeheartedly recommend Hannah and Becky Moody in South Yorks (Nr Barnsley, not far from the M1)’

The BD National Dressage Convention

We had a fantastic weekend at The BD National Dressage Convention listening to Carl’s inspiring training techniques whilst  the riders Charlotte, Samantha Thurman-Baker, Katie Bailey, Chloe Vell, Antonia Brown and Kim Moloney put into practice the points he was trying to get across to an extremely attentive audience – (how could you not be!) Charlotte and the most amazing horse EVER, Valegro, had the last session of each day. The points below taken from the H&H twitter feed are a summary of what Carl had said throughout the weekend – we are already putting into practice many of these and hope you find them useful & funny too as Carl was very entertaining 🙂

“Teach suspension in the trot and there in that moment you’ll find the beautiful picture.”
“For lateral work always remember to sit on your inside seatbone.”
“Even with a straight horse like Valegro we keep the tempi changes on the long side to keep the straightness.”
“If horse is strong, don’t go in straight lines, circle & circle until he’s not pulling & is balancing himself”
“It doesn’t matter what type of horse you have, you can teach it square halts – they’re ‘free’ marks.”
“Use half transitions to bring a horse back in trot and teach him to wait in balance rather than full half-halt”
“The trot is the easiest pace to change & improve but you need to buy a good walk and a good canter”
“Horses shouldn’t be in box for 23 hrs/day & just ridden – it isn’t fair. To keep healthy they must keep moving”
“Horses in self-carriage will get tired esp if not used to holding themselves so intersperse with stretching”
“If horse is stiff on outside rein, use renvers to soften them up and add weight to other rein.”
“If horse isn’t even in both reins don’t keep pulling the heavy one – work to put the weight in the empty rein”
BD convention: Antonia Brown demonstrates how correct stretching down helps SOS Wow to then work properly up to the competition frame
“The only way to improve/influence horses’ paces is to ride forward in a balanced way.”
“A tense horse’s lateral suppleness can be improved by very forward canter leg yields.”
“Don’t panic if horse makes a mistake in changes, it’s repetition repetition until he gets the hang of it.”
“Teach and practice flying changes on lines that aren’t in tests, like the R-C line”
“I use the outside leg not the inside to give aid to canter because that’s the aid in the tempi changes later”
“If you carry a whip just to make your horse go, you shouldn’t carry one. They are just for small corrections.”
“Walking for just 2 mins and sitting trot too early on in a session is not future-making for horses”
“If a horse won’t stretch at the beginning of session, work on a contact sooner then stretch when he is ready”
“Obedience to the hand and leg must start in the warm-up”
“Valegro’s so special because if you ask for nothing you get nothing, he moves normally & looks after himself”
“Charlotte calls me Grandad and I call her Edwina Scissorhands as she had to learn to soften her hands & arms”
“He is gorgeous. Anyone says he isn’t come and see me afterwards! He only ever wants to please”
“In tempi changes let the wall help do the work of keeping the horse straight rather than always on diagonals”
“Totilas proved that the lack of bond between horse and rider when compared with Charlotte and Valegro matters”
“You should ride about 200 transitions per session – fwd & back to make the horse rideable & on the aids”
“In the trot you have the piaffe/passage to get them light in front, in the canter you have the pirouettes.”
“Nip Tuck would love to be a front leg mover so we do lots of 10m circles and shoulder-in to engage hindlegs”
“If Sam [Thurman-Baker] survives this session she’ll be a star,” – Dances With Wolves is super hot today!
“Going and pulling this big youngster round a prelim in a 20×40 would be detrimental – he’s too big and fwd”
“There’s never just 1 person at the top; there’s always 2, be that a trainer, friend or mentor – or Charlotte”
“With big young horses let the upper body and the corner do the work, not the reins”
“If you’re doing young horse classes, take a box of tissues- not all judges will agree with you about yr horse”
“Riders blame saddles when the problem is usually that the horse isn’t straight and throws them off to side.”
“To teach horses to land from changes in uphill way, ride fwds into them then collect straight afterwards.”
“Everybody should have to ride quarter lines – they show if the horse is contained in the outside aids.”
“Half-halts are invisible – or should be – that’s why they’re so hard to explain. It’s what works for you.”
“There’s no such thing as dressage for eventers and dressage for dressage riders. It’s all just dressage”
“You often have to ask a mare, not tell them – as you wives out there will understand”
“Use lots of forwards and back transitions within the canter to spice up the hindleg”
“Escapado took three years to learn – it was all flying and no changing”
“Straightness is more difficult than piaffe/passage.” Do you agree?
