On Wednesday 20th March we took a lorry load of horses from the yard to compete at Northallerton ranging from the babys in the 4 year old classes through to the more mature ponies in the FEI PYO classes!

Becky and Jack Jack Moody-Lockey aka Carinsio was first in the Elementary class and won with an outstanding score of 81.18% which is very much deserved 🙂 Kelly and her own Chaim T (Slim) came second with 69.12% (which would normally be a very good score) 🙂 Both horses also competed in the 6 year old YH Class – Jack won with 8.12 and Slim was 4th with 7.64. We were very pleased with both boys!

Becky then competed Josie’s Don Angelo in the PYO A102 & PSG to take 1st and 2nd place with 70.26% and 64.71%. Becky also competed Josie’s Troy in the PYO PSG and came 3rd and Linzi had a great day riding Kwad getting 4th with 64.41% proving to be a very good partnership 🙂

It was then Lainey and Nora’s 2nd appearance on the competition scene for the 4 year old YH Class. It was role reversal with Lainey ‘Eleanor’ winning the class with 8.02 and Nora ‘Eaimbry Eleonora’ coming 4th with 7.8 which we thought was quite harsh considering she won at Myerscough with a higher score and has vastly improved since then, but we are still extremely pleased with both girls who once again behaved impeccably and we are very excited about the futures they have in the dressage world 🙂

The devastating decision was made last week for Biff (Furtsten Hit) to be put to sleep. He had suffered with extremely bad feet for a number of years due to his size and lack of foot growth. Our farrier Dean worked alongside our vet Peter from Hird & Partners tirelessly and fantastically to get them back on track, but tragically an injury to his hock whilst out in the field led to the final decision. It is such a sad loss of an amazingly talented and kind horse who was the big, beautiful, friendly giant of the yard and was loved by everyone.

The 3.30am start was well worth it on Thursday as we took Julie Lockey’s two four year old mares, Eaimbry Eleanora and Eleanor to do the young horse class and Josie’s Don Angelo to compete in he PSG with Becky.

For their first show ‘Nora’ and ‘Lainey’ behaved impeccably not only when ridden but also standing on the lorry for most of the day! Julie bought Nora as a yearling and is by Fidertanz and Lainey was bred by Julie and is by Furst Romancier. It was a very strong class with some lovely horses but Becky and Nora rose to the challenge and won with a score of 8.1. Lainey who is a couple of months behind Nora in her training also did extremely well and gained 5th place with a score of 7.48. These two are very excting prospects for the future 🙂

Don Angelo aka Donald ridden by Becky in the PSG scored an excellent score of 68.42% which considering he backed off a bit in the test is very promising as the score could have been much bigger. This put them into a very credible 3rd place and this horse has so much more to offer, Josie is a very lucky girl 🙂

Friday and Saturday was busy with Hannah and Becky training Eilidh Grant, Ryan Todd, Jess Knapton and Josie Gyllensward for their tests, they all had a really good show with some super marks and top three placings. We are very proud to have such professional young riders amongst out team!

I have to say Saturday night was fantastic and our LEGEND, Wallenstein stole the show with Becky in the Grand Prix music to Doctor Who. They brought tears to all our eyes. He won the class with 72% He loved the prize giving and tried to bronck Becky off haha

Caluna was also amazing and came 2nd with 69.29%  Again it was a great test but she just got a little tense and sometimes likes to take over (must be a girl thing!)

The Grand Prix took place on Sunday with Wally and Caluna taking part. There were some top combinations in the class and Wally and Caluna were both a bit tricky after their very exciting night but still got some good scores with Wally getting 4th with 66.31% and Caluna 5th with 65.85%

All in all it was a very successful show, with so much potential from riders and horses from the yard. We would like to thank everyone that supports, works and helps at Moody Dressage 🙂

We have had a great, successful 2012 which could not have been achieved without our amazing team who includes Lindsay Warren, Charlotte Hawke, Kirsty Mellor, Ryan Todd, Josie Gyllensward, Cheryl Goulding, Trudy Oxtoby, Samantha Brown, Ellie Darling, Jill Staffenson and Alex Thomson. So thank you to all for keeping the horses in tip top condition and turning them out so well 🙂

We would also like to give a massive thanks to our support team who includes Julie Lockey (Owner of Caluna, Wally, Jack & all the gorgeous babies!), Kelly Oxtoby (Who does a bit of everything!) Dean Bland (Super Duper Farrier), Peter Scholefield & Tim Booth (Our dedicated vets), Martin Brookes (Very helpful Dentist) &  Sam Smith (Chiropractor who works his magic touch on the horses!)

We had a fantastic weekend at The BD National Dressage Convention listening to Carl’s inspiring training techniques whilst  the riders Charlotte, Samantha Thurman-Baker, Katie Bailey, Chloe Vell, Antonia Brown and Kim Moloney put into practice the points he was trying to get across to an extremely attentive audience – (how could you not be!) Charlotte and the most amazing horse EVER, Valegro, had the last session of each day. The points below taken from the H&H twitter feed are a summary of what Carl had said throughout the weekend – we are already putting into practice many of these and hope you find them useful & funny too as Carl was very entertaining 🙂

“Teach suspension in the trot and there in that moment you’ll find the beautiful picture.”
“For lateral work always remember to sit on your inside seatbone.”
“Even with a straight horse like Valegro we keep the tempi changes on the long side to keep the straightness.”
“If horse is strong, don’t go in straight lines, circle & circle until he’s not pulling & is balancing himself”
“It doesn’t matter what type of horse you have, you can teach it square halts – they’re ‘free’ marks.”
“Use half transitions to bring a horse back in trot and teach him to wait in balance rather than full half-halt”
“The trot is the easiest pace to change & improve but you need to buy a good walk and a good canter”
